Income

There are three ways to benefit financially from your solar PV installation:

Well here are three good reasons:
  • From generating electricity
  • From selling electricity
  • From using self-generated electricity
Both incomes are obtained by registering your installation in the UK FITs scheme.

So, what is FITs? Well FITs, or Feed In Tariff is a Government backed scheme to encourage the uptake of renewable energy sources within the UK, in order to meet environmental targets.

The Fact's About FITs

The FITs scheme has been in operation since April 2010 and has proved so successful that the funding allowed for the initial phase has been used at a higher rate than anticipated forcing the Government to review the current payment levels.

The main change that will affect consumers is the reduction of the generation tariff from 43.3p/kWh to 21.0p/kWh for all installations registered after 12th December 2011.

This tariff rate is designed to provide householders with a rate of return of around 4.5%.

In addition, from 1st April 2012 all solar PV installations will have to meet new domestic energy efficiency requirements of an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of level C or above.

Where a domestic property does not meet these energy efficiency requirements the generation tariff may be reduced to 9p/kWh. If you want more information on improving the energy performance of your home, you might want to visit our PLANITHERM TOTAL+ page.

Whilst it wouldn't be unfair to say the best deal has gone, there are still good reasons to choose solar PV. Like most emerging technologies the cost of solar panel manufacture have come down over recent years (between 30 and 50 percent over the last 10 years). Combine this with a forecast increase in energy prices of between 30 and 50 percent by 2015 and you can see why choosing solar PV is still a sound investment and one that will more than pay back the cost of the installation over the 25 year period of the FITs scheme.

Lets look at some examples:

Example 1

A three bedroomed south facing semi detached house with a 2.9kWs solar PV installation would

Generate 2,527 kilowatt hours (kWh) per year or 87% of your annual electricity usage

Earn an annual income of between £650 and £700 from savings, export and FITs payments.

Save 30.0 tonnes of CO² over 25 years

Example 2

A four bedroomed south facing detached house with a 4.0kWs solar PV installation would

Generate 3,486 kilowatt hours (kWh) per year or 93% of your annual electricity usage

Earn an income of between £900 and £975 from savings, export and FITs payments.

Save 42.5 tonnes of CO² over 25 years
